There are so many reasons to eat locally. Here are our top 5 reasons to why eating local is best!
1.Eating local is better for you: Honestly.... did you know that when buying produce that has been grown across the country or across the world, it can take weeks or longer to get from the farm to your table? Which only means, these fruits and veggies have to be harvested prematurely, meaning it prevents some of their nutrients from ever forming.
2. Fresher always tastes better: Don't believe me, try it yourself. Take any veggie from you regular super market and the same one from a locally grown farmer market and try telling me you don't taste the difference. I dare you ;)
3. You get to eat in season: Produce that is purchased in season is more likely to be fresher, sweeter and cheaper, meaning your only eating the best of the best. When grown locally, the crops are picked at their peak of ripeness. Which allows us to consuming closer to when they were harvested, meaning they will be higher in nutritional value.
4. It supports our local economy and is better for the environment: By buying foods grown and raised closer to home, you help maintain farmland and green space in your area. You are also supporting and feeding families close to home! It helps to build our local economy and gives you more control of where your dollars goes, instead of being handed over to a corporation in another city, province, or country. Staying close to home allows the food to move through fewer hands, which intern keeps more of the money in the hands of the people growing it.
5. It builds relationships and community: You get to know who's growing your food and how your food is being grown. It allows you to develop relationships with the people growing your food and the opportunity to learn exactly how its grown. People always forget how important the food that goes in your mouth is. Its the building blocks of who you are. We literally 'are what we eat'. If we took a moment everyday to slow down and truly think about that statement for a moment, you would quickly realize this is the most important reason of all.
